Championship leader Max Verstappen takes important Pole position for 2021 United States Grand Prix ahead of his title rival Lewis Hamilton and teammate Sergio Perez. This is first career Pole at Austin for Max.
“It was quite exciting out there, in Q3 my first lap wasn’t amazing. In the final lap, I started slipping, there was a bit of drizzle, I wasn’t sure I could hold on to my lap time. P1 and P3 for the team is a strong result. We’ll work together as a team to get the best possible result.” said, the polesitter after grabbing his 12th career pole in Formula1.
Lewis Hamilton was on provisional pole until Verstappen’s final lap. The Brit is very happy with the results. The Brit said, “I gave it everything today, a bit of a struggle through qualifying. Since FP1 we fell backwards a bit. I was happy with my Q3 lap, it was everything I had. Mindset tomorrow is to win this race.“
Sergio Perez gave his best in-front of huge Mexican fans to qualify in P3. The Mexican was on provisional pole after first flying laps in Q3. But he failed to improve his time in the final effort.
“We were really close, on that final lap… Unfortunately it wasn’t as good throughout the lap, the rain hit me too hard in the final sector, I lost a bit of grip. Tomorrow is a very long race, there will be a lot of degradation on these tyres. I’m looking forward to it!“- Said, Sergio Perez.
Valtteri Bottas qualifies in P4, but the Mercedes man will start the race from P9 on the grid due to five place engine penalty.
Behind the top four, Leclerc is best of the rest for Ferrari in P5, half a tenth ahead of his team mate Sainz in P6. Then comes McLaren duo Ricicardo and Norris in P7 & P8 respectively. It’s a big blow for McLaren in the championship battle with Ferrari, as both red cars qualified ahead of them.
with Gasly pipping Tsunoda for the ninth place. The top five teams are all qualified in Top-10.
