Formula 1: Aston Martin signs Luca Furbatto from Alfa Romeo

After scoring it’s first ever Formula 1 podium in team’s history at 2021 Azerbaijan GP, Aston Martin made another important move to bolster it’s technical department ahead of French GP.

On Thursday, June 17th, the Aston Martin team confirmed that new hire Luca Furbatto will take over as Engineering Director from 2022 season. Luca is currently working with Alfa Romeo as a chief designer.

Furbatto already has 20 years’ experience working within F1, taking in spells with McLaren, Toro Rosso and Manor before moving to the Sauber Group as chief designer in 2017, leading the design efforts of Sauber and, latterly, Alfa Romeo in that time.

According to team’s official statement Luca will report to Andrew Green, who takes up the new position of Chief Technical Officer with immediate effect.

The signing of Luca is the first of a number of significant new hires as the team continues to add strength in depth to its technical operations.

Aston Martin team principal Otmar Szafnauer has made no secret of the team’s future ambitions of wanting to win a World Championship by 2026, by expanding the team’s current workforce from around 535 people up to 800.

Luca Furbatto on Joining Aston Martin:

“It is very exciting to join Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team as Engineering Director. It is a project that has all the ingredients for success – committed leadership, a talented workforce, and fresh investment in resources.”

Luca Furbatto will bring lots of experience with him like Sebastian Vettel

Otmar Szafnauer, CEO & Team Principal, Aston Martin :

“As we continue to add weight to our technical team, we are hugely excited that Luca Furbatto has chosen to join Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team.

“Working with our existing Engineering Group, he will bring a valuable perspective and knowledge to help shape our approach in the short and medium term.

“This appointment coincides with Andrew Green stepping up to a new role where he will take a global perspective on the company’s mid to long-term technical strategy.”

Andrew Green, Chief Technical Officer, Aston Martin :

“The recruitment of Luca Furbatto adds an exceptionally talented engineer to our Technical Team.
