PL: Southampton 2 – 3 Manchester United, Super-Sub Cavani inspires United comeback win against Saints

Manchester United’s new summer arrival Edinson Cavani came off the bench to inspire Manchester United to an incredible 3-2 comeback win against Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon. The win moves Man Utd up to seventh place in the standings with 16 points from nine matches. Southampton are fifth on 17.

United become first team in premier league history to win four consecutive away matches after trailing each game. Solskjaer praised his new center Forward Cavani, during his post-match interview, “He knows what he wants to eat, how much he wants to recover. It was top movement [for the second goal], his timing is fantastic. His hunger to get on the end of things is the key for a centre-forward.”

Ole made two changes to the side that swept past Istanbul Basaksehir in midweek as Mason Greenwood replaced Anthony Martial, who fell ill the night before the match, and Nemanja Matic came in for Cavani, who was named on the bench. Donny van de Beek, meanwhile, made his first league start for the Reds.

Ralph Hasenhüttl named an unchanged team from his side that drew 1-1 at Wolves, as Saints extended their unbeaten Premier League run to seven matches.

The hosts got off to a superb start when Jan Bednarek scored after 23 minutes, nodding in James Ward-Prowse’s corner. Alex McCarthy stood firm to deny Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes on the follow-up before Ward-Prowse doubled the hosts’ lead.

The midfielder’s curling 33rd-minute free-kick evaded David De Gea, who collided with a post and had to be replaced at the interval by Dean Henderson. But it was United’s other half-time substitute who made the greatest impact.

Cavani teed up Fernandes to score on the turn just before the hour mark. The striker then dived headlong to bring United level on 74 minutes and he snatched an eighth successive away league victory for his side with another poacher’s header in added time.
