Young Brit Lando Norris, achieved his first Formula 1 podium in his second season with Mclaren. Norris done exceptional job in his rookie year along with Ferrari bound Carlos Sainz to put Mclaren 4th in 2019 constructor standings.
Mclaren driver, took surprise P4 in 2020 first qualifying session ahead of his teammate,Ferrari’s and Racingpoint. And he got promoted to P3 on the starting grid just hours before Sundays race, thanks to Hamilton’s three place grid penalty.
Norris had nice get away at start of the race and he was gaining on second place Max Verstappen, before the Dutch man squeezed and forced Norris to take escape route in the First corner.
As suggested by Norris after qualifying, his Mclaren struggled to compete with likes of Mercedes and Red Bull during race and he was overtaken by both Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon during initial stages of race.
Norris drove a strong race under chaotic conditions, safety car was deployed three times during the race. Mclaren tactics also spot on, to bring Norris in for fresh set of Medium tires during second safety car period unlike Mercedes drivers and Perez, who continued for track position.
Though he was passed by Ferrari man Charles Leclerc in the final stages,Brit was able to fend of his teammate Sainz challenge.Due to 5 seconds time penalty for both Hamilton and Perez for different reasons, podium was within reach for Norris.
It was that final lap of the race which turned out fastest lap of the race (1:07.475) earned him first career F1 podium. Norris was 0.728 seconds quicker than Hamilton in the final lap.
