Lewis Hamilton claimed second victory of the season and 86th win of his career ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in P2 and Valtteri Bottas in P3.
This will be 8th win for Lewis Hamilton in Hungaroring and with that he matches another Michael Schumacher record of winning a race maximum of 8 times at same venue. Schumi did it in Magny Cours, France.
Mercedes and Hamilton are unstoppable
After winning Styrian GP last weekend, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes done it again here in Hungaroring. It’s three out of three wins so far for Mercedes. Bottas in other W11 almost secured another 1-2 finsish for Mercedes.The Fin came within 0.5 seconds of second placed Verstappen in the final lap after making an extra pit-stop than Red Bull man.
After starting from pole, Lewis pulled away from second place man Stroll in the first lap of the race, briefly he lost lead of the race when Mercedes pitted him for Dry Tyre’s.
Hamilton dominated the race from the start till end.The Brit, lapped entire field till fourth placed Lance Stroll before stopping for late tire change. With new soft tires on, Lewis secured extra championship point by doing fastest lap of the race in the penultimate lap of the race.
With this form, Mercedes are poised to win it all this season.It’s not a good sign for Sports though.
Max verstappen pre-race Crash
Verstappen crashed his car in damp conditions on the reconnaissance lap ahead of the race, causing damage to the front-end of the Red Bull RB16.
The Red Bull mechanics were forced to fix Verstappen’s car in the build-up to lights out, but managed to complete the repairs to the front wing, nose and suspension with seconds to spare before the five-minute warning cut-off.
Speaking to media after the race, Verstappen explained the bizarre incident which almost cost him the race .
“It was not how I wanted it in the beginning of course, ending up in the barriers on the laps to the grid,” Verstappen said.
“But the mechanics did amazing job to fix the car. I don’t know how they did it, but incredible. To pay them back with the second place, I was very pleased with that.
“The first half was very crucial and from there on, I think we had the right calls, and we had good pace. We just kept doing our own thing and of course to be able to split the two Mercedes cars is good for us.”
Haas with perfect Tire strategy at start of the race
Just hours before start of the race, Rain started poring down over Budapest. All the teams decided to go with Intermediate tires except Haas who opted for Wets.But Haas Surprised everyone by pitting both of their drivers at end of installation lap for new sets of Mediums, which indeed proved a master stroke.
As track started to dry up after few laps, all drivers pitted for fresh set of dry tires except Haas drivers, who climbed to P3 and P4 after first pit-stops.
Kevin Magnussen scored first points of the season for Haas by finishing in P9 ahead of Sainz in P10 and Charles leclerc in P11.
Disappointment for Ferrari, Mclaren and Renault
After scoring surprise podium in the season opener, Ferrari man Charles ‘s bad form continues as he finishes race in P11 after poor Ferrari pit call to replace Inters with Red Softs instead of Mediums.His teammate four-time champion impresses with P6 finish after losing nearly 7 seconds in the pits due to traffic in the pits.
Lando Norris’s golden run of scoring points come to an end,as he finishes in P13. Ocon failed to impress again as his Aussie teammate finishes in P8.
Williams again failed to convert their good starting grid in to point finishes, Latifi laped by Lewis 5 times tells the story about their struggles.
