Team USA athletes sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to basketball star Kevin Durant ahead of the Opening Ceremony Friday (23 July) at Tokyo 2020. There was one issue, though: It wasn’t the two-time Olympic gold medallist’s birthday.
It’s unclear how or why the song broke out, but Durant’s birthday is actually 29 Sept.
Durant – a leader on the U.S. men’s team – is one of just three players on the squad with Olympic experience. He’s seeking a third gold medal as the squad goes after a fourth consecutive Olympic title.
Men’s basketball gets underway on Sunday (25 July), with Team USA facing off against France. Their group also includes Iran and Czech Republic.
